Dr. Katharine Hind

My research examines the biodiversity and evolutionary history of seaweeds. In particular, I combine traditional and molecular classification techniques to gain a more holistic understanding of algal diversity.  Currently, I am using an integrative taxonomic approach to classify species diversity in a unique group of red seaweed, the coralline algae. Due to their simple morphology, many corallines are impossible to identify in the field and there are few characters on which to base evolutionary relationships. As a result, coralline algae are one of the most understudied seaweed groups, and it is unknown exactly how many species live in Canadian oceans.
